Three book designs for novel adaptations of animated films: The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and the Breadwinner.
This collection of stories is a student project based off of three films by the animation studio Cartoon Saloon. The first two stories are based in Irish mythology, while the Breadwinner is told in modern day Afghanistan. I found similarities in Gaelic and Afghani patterns and combined elements from both and integrated them into the pattern designs on the exterior case, covers, and spines. Each book is depicted with a prominent color that is featured in each film. For example, The Secret of Kells takes place in the woods while the Breadwinner takes place in the desert. I therefore associated green and red with each respectively. In my sketches, I highlighted the main character of each story as the central figure in each composition, with hints of other characters and environments in the backgrounds.
