East of the Sun,
West of the Moon
Children’s book illustration and design for an enchanting tale about a young girl who travels to the edge of the earth in order to protect those she loves.
East of the Sun, West of the Moon is a Norwegian fairytale about a young girl’s extraordinary journey to save a young prince cursed into the form of a polar bear. When the bear takes her to his secret palace in faraway mountains, she is treated courteously, but she experiences the bear’s unfathomable sadness, and deep mystery. As the truth of his curse starts to unravel, the young girl finds the courage to challenge the curse and embark on the path before her. In order to depict the deep emotion, magic, and romanticism of this story, I chose a vibrant color palette and layered the illustrations with elegant details and textures. Because the story is extensive, I introduced text spreads to give the story some room to breathe. I activated most of these pages with spot illustrations in order to advance the narrative.
