Vinyl packaging, insleeve, and gatefold design for M.IA.’s album “Matangi.”
The album’s title is a variant of M.I.A.’s real first name, and also references the Hindu goddess Matangi, who governs speech, music, knowledge and the arts. Themes relating to Hinduism, including reincarnation and karma are featured in the lyrics, and the music blends western and eastern styles. Her voice commands attention and echoes loudly like that of a goddess, which was the driving force behind my concept and how I depicted her. As a tamil refugee from Sri Lanka, M.I.A. uses the motif of a tiger as a reference to the Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a political organization and symbol of resistance, which I used in the gatefold and insleeves.
